Territory to retain its status

Capital International Perspective, the Geneva-based manager and calculator of the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) indices, says next year's handover does not warrant a change in Hong Kong's status in the MSCI.

'The transfer of power, while unprecedented, does not by itself warrant a change in Hong Kong's status in the MSCI at this time,' Capital International said yesterday.

Hong Kong is part of the MSCI Developed Market Indices, while China is included in the Emerging Markets Free Indices.

Capital International said the autonomy guaranteed in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration made a change unnecessary.
