Hill roars off with Grand Prix crown
Japanese Grand Prix winner Damon Hill drove away from the Suzuka motor racing circuit overjoyed at finishing this season as the Formula One champion and apprehensive that he will almost certainly start every race next season from the back of the pack.
The Briton, who needed only to finish sixth in Japan, was handed the championship when Williams teammate and only challenger, Jacques Villeneuve, of Canada, crashed out of the race on the 37th lap. Defending champion Michael Schumacher was second in his Ferrari. But Hill's chances of defending the championship appear slim due to his move to Formula One minnow TWR Arrows next year.
