More than 2,000 youngsters are expected to take part in the Baseball Ambassador Scheme, organised by the Hong Kong Baseball Association.

The aim of the scheme is to promote baseball and encourage families to take part in the sport and its related activities. An association spokesman said youth baseball was fast becoming popular in the territory because it brought families closer together.

'Parents are involved in different roles. These include team manager, assistant coach, scorer and umpire, year-book co-ordinator and annual banquet co-ordinator. A happy family spirit can be built as children enjoy the sport,' the spokesman said.

The scheme will last 10 months, from August this year to the end of May. During this period, local baseball ambassadors will be promoting baseball activities, as well as managing their own teams in the games.

Training courses for coaches, umpires and scorers are being offered.

Those wishing to join the scheme can call the Hong Kong Baseball Association on 2504 8330.
