Miscalculated

I refer to the report headlined, 'Helicopter rescues paraglider in tree' (South China Morning Post, October 7).

There was no crash, there was no tree, there were no injuries.

Due to his own miscalculation, Chan Man-fai failed to catch a thermic cycle and as a result was not able to fly to the normal landing area in Shek O.

To avoid endangering himself or anyone else, he chose to land on a clearing on Cape D'Aguilar at 1pm.

Unfortunately, by 6pm, Mr Chan had only progressed 80 metres up the mountain.

It became clear that it was impossible for him to walk out of the area due to the thick surrounding bushes and steep sides.
