Street sweeper caught in crossfire

A street sweeper was shot in the leg when he was caught in the crossfire between police officers and two men on the run.

One of the suspects was also shot, in the right leg, and arrested.

The second suspect, who was not caught, had stolen an officer's firearm during a fracas, police said.

The incident began when a police sergeant and a constable stopped two men leaving a building in the Inner Harbour area.

One of the pair pulled a knife, assaulted the constable and snatched his pistol, said police.

The officers chased the pair, and the sergeant fired shots. The escaping duo returned fire. Police declined to say how many shots were fired, but a passer-by said 'at least 10 bangs were heard'.

The two injured men were taken to a government hospital where their condition was reported as satisfactory.
