ASIA'S first woman bishop is to be consecrated in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh today.

'As a servant of the people, I have to obey the orders of the Almighty,' said Dr Katakshamma ahead of her appointment as bishop of the Good Samaritan Evangelical Lutheran Church in Badhachalam.

Dr Katakshamma's appointment has raised eyebrows, even though Lutherans are considered among the most progressive of the country's Christian community.

But locals said her appointment seemed a conscious decision to adopt a stand against male chauvinism.

Dr Katakshamma is conscious of the monumental tasks she faces and how carefully she will be watched.

'If I discharge my duties faithfully by serving the poor, then I can be considered a role model,' said the softly-spoken sexagenarian.

'If something goes wrong, then many accusing fingers will be pointed at me.'
