Immigrants say no to free lunch, luxury tour

New immigrants are turning down the offer of a free lunch and luxury tour of the territory.

A four-day package with seminars and expert advice on everyday issues has attracted only 50 applicants.

The government-run programme covers information on social services, the law, medical facilities, housing and education. A day trip takes in sights including the Peak, Repulse Bay and the High Court.

Headmistress Angela Tsang, of Fukien Middle School, which has provided space for the seminars, said yesterday the topics were not suitable.

'Most of them are interested in getting jobs. The information the Government is offering is not what they need most,' she said.

'Most of new arrivals lack fundamental knowledge on Hong Kong. They get their first-hand information by watching television.' One of the organisers, Eastern District Office, acknowledged many new arrivals were too busy making ends meet.

Chiu Sau-chan, in charge of the office, said: 'But we will learn from this and let it help us develop a better programme in the future.'
