Control emotions, pupils urged

Students at Tuen Mun Government Secondary School were told on speech day that it was important to control their emotions.

Guest-of-honour Ko Wing-kow, principal of Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School, said the discipline was important to students' academic and personal development.

'Those who know how to control their emotions will have a higher level of intelligence,' Mr Ko said.

'The ways of dealing with emotions can be categorised into immediate and long-term ones.

'For immediate purposes, a student who loses his temper should calm down himself first by counting one to 10.

'Or, he should try to forget himself and take others into consideration. Being considerate and sympathetic are the keys to preventing destructive behaviour.' Mr Ko said that in the long run, the most effective way of controlling the emotions was to develop communication skills and gain more knowledge.

'A person should learn how to adjust and release his emotions in a positive and constructive way.

'Then, he won't be frustrated by failures or the scolding and teasing of others,' Mr Ko explained.

Mr Ko added that the family was a good place for students to love and take care of each other, while at school students could learn how to communicate and co-operate with each other.

'Then, as one grows up, he will apply his knowledge and intelligence in society,' he said.

The ceremony commenced with an annual report by Principal Fung Ying-chee.

In his report, Mr Fung said students had achieved brilliant results in public examinations in the 1995-96 academic year.

In the Advanced Level Examination, Cheung Koon-ho, Hui Hoi-chi and Tse Shan-shan each scored four distinctions.

Wong Kin-pong obtained A-grades in all nine HKCEE subjects.

Tse Shan-shan received a bronze medal in the Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (HK) 1996.

Form Six student Lau Man-wai was selected as one of the New Territories' Outstanding Students for her excellent academic record and keen involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Mr Ko presented certificates and prizes to graduates and the school's outstanding students.

The graduation ceremony ended on a high note, with a performance by the school's symphonic band.
