Course sheds light on gene study

Controversial scientific work involving introducing foreign genes into animals and plants was discussed during a course at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).

The technology has led to breakthroughs in medical and agricultural research.

It has led to scientist being able to take out defective genes and 'repair' many living organisms. Scientists are even finding ways of understanding the causes of inherited diseases.

Disease resistance can be bred and engineered in plants and animals.

The three-week HKU course, co-sponsored by the Industry Department, was the first in Asia.
