A young man was killed in an arson attack in a housing estate at Sha Tin yesterday morning.

Firemen went to the blazing flat in Skylark House, Sha Kok Estate, to find the iron grille locked with a bicycle chain and the residents unable to get out.

A 53-year-old woman escaped by crawling out of the flat down the side of the building to the floor below, despite suffering burns to her arms and legs.

She was in hospital last night in a stable condition. But her 24-year-old son was certified dead on arrival.

A 39-year-old woman, believed to be a neighbour, was in critical condition last night.

Government chemists are investigating traces of an inflammable liquid found on the floor, believed to be kerosene.

A police spokesman said the case was being classified as homicide and arson. No arrest had been made last night.
