Newport News Shipbuilding is to buy the first newbuild double-hull ship built in a United States shipyard that meets the requirements of the US Oil Pollution Act of 1990, which requires that by 2015 all ships carrying petroleum products in US coastal waters be double-hulled.

     The petroleum product tanker is the first vessel of a four-ship order received by Newport News from the Greek shipping company Eletson. The ship is being sold to the builder to meet the transport needs of third-company Mobil, the shipyard said.
