Opera star's relatives sue for libel

Relatives of Cantonese opera star Tang Wing-cheung have filed a Supreme Court writ against radio talk show hosts Pamela Pak Wan-kam and Paul Tse Wai-chun over alleged libellous comments.

A relative of Mr Tang's, Hung Ka-chuen, made the comments during the Metro Broadcast programmes Justice and Compassion and Heart To Heart . Mr Tang's daughter, Angela Tang Chui-yuk, and her aunt, Emma Fok Hung Kwok-wah, filed the writ seeking 'damages [including aggravated damages] for libel, spoken, narrated and published by Hung Ka-chuen and broadcast by Pak Wan-kam, Paul Tse Wai-chun and Metro Broadcast on January 28 and 30'.

Several weekly magazines picked up the broadcast comments. The writ also requests 'an injunction to restrain Mr Hung, Ms Pak and Mr Tse and Metro Broadcast' from making any 'similar libels upon the aunt and daughter'.

Mr Tang, 81, better known as Sun Ma Chai, has been in and out of hospital in recent months.

He is embroiled in a dispute over his fortune with his wife and four children.
