A fugitive in central China who bought a train ticket with a lost ID card was later caught by police when they discovered the travel document belonged to yet another man on the run, a local newspaper reported.

Police noticed that the man looked different to the photo on the ID card and pulled him aside for further questioning during a routine patrol at the train station in Xiaogan, Hubei province, the Chutian Metropolis Daily said.

The ID turned out to belong to a man surnamed Zhou, who was wanted by police in Jingmen for unspecified charges.

The man confessed that his name was Yang and that he found Zhou’s ID in the street. Police were surprised to find that Yang, 34, was also on the run.

He allegedly raised nearly 50 million yuan (HK$62 million) funds illegally and had been on the run since 2014.

Police turned Yang over to the Jingmen police in charge of the illegal fundraising case.
