Star Ferry's application for a 44 per cent increase in fares was rejected by the Transport Advisory Committee yesterday. Instead, the committee recommended a 7.5 per cent rise.

If the increase goes ahead, upper-deck fares on the Central to Tsim Sha Tsui route will increase 20 cents to $2.20.

Under the company's proposal, the fare would have increased 90 cents to $2.90.

The company said last week it sought the hefty rise to keep its 30-year-old vessels running as maintenance costs soar. It also wanted to phase in new vessels.

The committee recommended an increase of more than eight per cent for Hongkong and Yaumatei Ferry.
