Gene - Drawn To The Deep End

Gene - Drawn To The Deep End (Polydor) In many respects, this is the album Gene always wanted to make. Played with new-found confidence and slickly produced, Drawn To The Deep End leaves for dead their endearing but weedy debut, Olympian.

A lot has changed in the past 12 months for the London quartet. Most significantly, they have moved from independent label Costermonger to Polydor and the first single, Fighting Fit, with its snappy chorus and driving riff, deserves to land the big blow - it is a genuine rocker.

However, the only other full-blown rock tilt is Voice Of The Father. Thereafter it is back on well-tramped ground - brooding, mid-tempo paeans that sound a little too close to The Smiths for comfort.

This is good indie guitar-pop but whether Watford's finest are artists, as they purport to be, or merely stylists is something still to be debated.
