Democrats renew veto warning

The Democratic Party yesterday renewed its threat to vote against the Budget if the Government failed to increase monthly social security payments for the elderly by $300.

Legislator Law Chi-kwong said his party had told Financial Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen its views.

'To increase the payments by $300 a month would only add $360 million. This . . . accounts for only 1.5 per cent of total expenditure,' he said.

Mr Law said Mr Tsang would consider the matter.

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong has not decided whether to try to veto the Budget.
