Jockey Club bosses last night promised prompt action to save the reputation of local racing after the number of suspects arrested in connection with an alleged illegal betting and race-fixing scandal rose to 41.
A fifth jockey was among 23 people detained yesterday by the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
The arrests, which also included at least two trainers, punters and Jockey Club staff, followed Sunday's initial swoop when 18 people were detained.
Scores of computers, documents and videotapes connected to the alleged scandal were also loaded into vans and taken to ICAC headquarters.
By last night, six of those arrested had been freed on bail while the others remained in custody. No charges have been laid.
Top Jockey Club officials, led by chief executive Lawrence Wong Chi-kwong, met in an emergency session yesterday after being swamped with calls from anxious race fans seeking assurances that Saturday's Sha Tin meeting will go ahead.
