Food industry grows
Total restaurant receipts in Hong Kong were $55.3 billion in 1996, a 5 per cent increase over 1995 levels, provisional Census and Statistics Department data shows.
Receipts of bars increased by 3 per cent in value terms and those of Chinese restaurants rose 2 per cent.
Fast food outlets' receipts increased by 10 per cent in value and those of non-Chinese restaurants grew by 11 per cent.
In the fourth quarter of 1996, total restaurant receipts increased 9 per cent year-on-year to $14.6 billion.
