UI Cup future in doubt

UEFA may scrap the UI Cup competition because of a boycott by several major federations.

UEFA secretary general Gerhard Aigner said that England, Italy, Spain and Portugal continued to ignore the 60-team summer competition guaranteeing the best three teams berths in the UEFA Cup.

'The whole thing is not very pleasant, looking at the financial aspect,' Aigner said.

The UI Cup was initiated three years ago to give the former Intertoto Cup a boost by awarding three UEFA Cup berths.

Girondins Bordeaux got to the UEFA Cup finals last year as a UI Cup qualifier but for most top clubs the competition is not attractive.
