Rezoning to boost supply of housing

The Government has approved the rezoning of a number of sites in Kwai Chung to residential use, increasing the supply of flats on the market.

The rezoning was endorsed by the Town Planning Board yesterday after it approved the amendments to the Kwai Chung Outline Zoning Plan.

The amendments would help the early rehousing of residents affected by the Hong Kong Housing Society's Comprehensive Redevelopment Programme in the Kwai Chung district, a spokesman said.

According to the Town Planning Board, a 1.41-hectare site in Shek Lei Estate and a 0.23-hectare site to the south of Tai Wo Hau Road have been rezoned from open space to residential for public housing development.

In addition, a 0.45-hectare site at Lai King Hill Road opposite the Princess Margaret Hospital, now occupied by surplus government quarters, has been rezoned from government institution or community use, to residential.

To make up for the loss of open space, a 2.15-hectare site at the junction of Castle Peak Road and Kwai Chung Circumferential Road has been rezoned from residential use to open space.
