Top party post for rising star

A popular politician was promoted to Communist Party secretary of the prosperous province of Shandong yesterday.

Wu Guanzheng, until now the party secretary in Jiangxi province, replaced Zhao Zhihao, Xinhua (the New China News Agency) reported.

His place will be filled by Shu Huiguo, one of Mr Wu's four deputies.

The report did not say if Mr Zhao, 66, will be given a new job, and it seems likely he will retire.

Mr Wu, 59, is seen as a rising star on the political scene and has been praised for his reformist stance.

Although he holds the same position of party secretary, Shandong is a more wealthy and powerful province.

Mr Wu, a former engineer and graduate of Qinghua University, is believed to be a supporter of President Jiang Zemin.
