The local shipping industry is maintaining a steady demand for well-trained and qualified local seamen on ocean-going, river trade and local vessels, a survey conducted by the Vocational Training Council (VTC) has found.

The industry-wide survey, undertaken by the Merchant Navy Training Board of the VTC, collected updated manpower information for determining future requirements.

The survey found that during the survey period, there were 1,691 active Hong Kong seafarers engaged on ocean-going vessels, comprising 1,178 officers and 513 ratings.

Of the 597 ships under Hong Kong ownership, management or crewing agency, 349 had Hong Kong seafarers on board.
