Japan media get handover fever
Japan cannot get enough of the handover. Its media are sending the largest contingent - outnumbering those from the United States, Britain and China.
With 7,126 media personnel registered, the ceremonies marking the transfer of sovereignty are a bigger news event than the historic South African elections that ended apartheid.
There are 1,092 Japanese journalists, photographers and technicians from 24 organisations registered to cover the ceremonies marking the transfer of sovereignty, according to figures released yesterday.
This compares with 601 media personnel coming from 16 Chinese news outlets and 617 from 50 organisations in Britain, said the handover ceremony co-ordination office.
There will be 2,669 media workers from Hong Kong representing 68 organisations and 237 personnel are coming from 19 Taiwanese media outlets.
The second-largest contingent will be from the US with 934 personnel representing 54 organisations.
Coverage in Canada - the most popular destination for Hong Kong emigrants - will come from 38 personnel representing 13 organisations.
