Morocco's merchant maritime transport activity rose 7.4 per cent to 5.15 million tonnes in 1996, worth US$230 million, according to a government official.

The business generated turnover of 2.16 billion dirhams (about HK$1.78 billion) in 1996, a drop of one per cent compared with the previous period, the merchant maritime directorate said.

Europe remained Morocco's main commercial partner with 90 per cent of total trade exchanges, it said.
