China's wine imports in the first four months of this year were 50 times those in the period last year, and were worth US$1.22 million, news reports say.

Beijing's Financial Times said Chinese drinkers were particularly fond of red wine, which accounted for 80 per cent of 1997 imports.

The sharp rise in wine imports apparently reflected changing tastes among Chinese drinkers, it said.
