The Army has arrested two men thought to have stolen a large quantity of ammunition in Liaoning province.

The Liaoning Daily said the men - identified by their surnames as Meng and Xia - were suspected of breaking into an arsenal in Dantong.

It was alleged they took 73 hand grenades, 15,000 rounds of ammunition, two pairs of night-vision binoculars and eight telescopes in the raid on May 4.

The paper said all the stolen material had been recovered. The men were arrested six days after the break-in and had confessed to their crimes, it added.

Meng and Xia were not soldiers but lived in military family quarters.

Seven people have been killed in explosions across the country in recent months.

Some incidents were the work of separatists in Xinjiang. Others were planned by workers who lost their jobs after firms went bust.

The authorities have stepped up their control over explosives in the wake of the incidents.
