A BOAT carrying Hong Kong protesters to the Diaoyu Islands was forced to detour to Taiwan yesterday, after an activist injured his shoulder.

Ho Hon-man was hurled across the deck of the Diaoyu Tai as strong winds hit the coast of Fujian.

He was among 20 activists who set off on Thursday to claim Chinese sovereignty of the disputed islands. The 100-tonne vessel also carried two reporters and eight crew.

Commander of the Action Committee for Defending the Diaoyu Islands, Albert Ho Chun-yan, took the ship to Taichung, Taiwan, for medical help.

Deputy commander Tsang Kin-shing said yesterday those who continued the journey remained calm.

The accident would delay the protests by at least a day.
