First reading for legal laws

Two bills providing for technical transitional matters related to the Judiciary will be tabled to the provisional legislature for their first reading today.

The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal (Amendment) Bill 1997 concerns Basic Law requirements relating to the nationality, right of abode and appointment procedures of the court's judges.

Under the proposed legislation, the term 'Attorney-General's Chambers' will be replaced by the 'Department of Justice', 'Chief Justice of the Supreme Court' by 'Chief Judge of the High Court' while 'High Court' will be replaced by 'Court of First Instance'.

The Judicial Service Commission (Amendment) Bill 1997 relates to judicial appointments.
