POLICE in Beijing launched a special taskforce yesterday to keep tabs on the behaviour of officers and prevent them abusing their authority.

Thirty members of the Police Affairs Supervisory Team, wearing white helmets and special armbands, would patrol the capital's streets around-the-clock, said Xinhua (the New China News Agency).

The team was formed in accordance with the 'Regulations on Supervising Public Security Departments', recently approved by the State Council, said Zhang Liangji, director of the city's Municipal Public Security Bureau.

It would supervise and monitor the behaviour of officers and correct their manners in an effort to protect the image of the police. Any officers found committing unlawful activities would be penalised on the spot, said Mr Zhang.

Secret investigations will be carried out and there is a complaints telephone hotline.
