Give credit where it is due

David Chu's column is always of interest but why cannot he be more magnanimous towards the British as the handover approaches? He implies in his latest column ('The end is nigh for prophets of doom', South China Morning Post, May 29) that the past leadership of Hong Kong has been uncaring.

Can he not pay tribute to past governors and their respective administrations? Hong Kong owes much to its harbour and its people, to the churches and many schools, to the Hong Kong Police (Hong Kong must be one of the safest places to live in Asia) and to a Civil Service which is the strength of the Hong Kong Government.

There have been errors and imperfections but after 37 years in Hong Kong I have come to take pride in the territory's achievements which are phenomenal and due in no small measure to its leadership.

The present governor is not everyone's 'cup of tea' but he certainly cares for the people of Hong Kong and their future.
