We are writing to call attention to an egregious violation of human rights in Indonesia, concerning a 71-year-old of prisoner of conscience named Pudjo Prasetio, who is desperately in need of medical care.
Pudjo Prasetio has committed no crime. Rather, he has been in prison since 1967 for his political affiliations.
Though he suffers from Parkinson's disease and had a stroke in 1993, his requests for transfer to an old people's home have been denied.
Pudjo Prasetio spent 12 years in detention in Bali before being brought to trial on charges of subversion.
Although no evidence was presented to suggest that he engaged in any 'subversive' or criminal activities, Pudjo Prasetio was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Mr Prasetio was a member of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI), which was blamed by the government for a coup attempt in 1965. It has been clearly shown that the vast majority of PKI leaders and members had no knowledge and played no role in the coup attempt.
