Measures

I refer to the report headlined, 'Fears of rise in 'hidden' sex attacks' in mental hospitals (Sunday Morning Post, June 8).

While staff of Kwai Chung Hospital acknowledge the occurrence of several incidents of indecent assault within its compound, I must point out that measures have been taken to address such matters and these were explained to your reporter during the interview.

Firstly, sex education has been incorporated into patient management. Secondly, security measures have been stepped up. All visitors must be registered at the hospital entrance. Thirdly, patrols by watchmen and other staff make sure that patients are as safe as possible within hospital grounds. Fourthly, there are post-incident meetings and counselling to victims and anyone who requires it after each case of indecent assault is reported. A report will be made to the police as appropriate.

Lastly, and by no means least, I wish to point out that staff and patients have become more vigilant. Patients are encouraged to report immediately and staff are instructed to examine each case promptly. By working closely as a team, we strive to safeguard the best interests of patients.
