Intel has unveiled a single-chip Fast Ethernet device that combines the functions of a media-access controller, physical interface and line equaliser.

The 82558 chip allows networking at speeds of 10 or 100 megabits per second and enables off-hours maintenance. It also helps boot, manage and run Net PCs from a remote server.
