Construction has begun on the second of three hydroelectric generating stations planned along the Qingjiang river in the central province of Hubei. The three billion yuan (about HK$2.78 billion) Gaobazhou Station is to have three power plants with a combined generating capacity of 252,000 kilowatts, Xinhua (the New China News Agency) reported yesterday. The three stations are being built in conjunction with the giant Three Gorges dam on the nearby Yangtze River. China is building a series of major hydroelectric dams to meet rapidly growing power demands for industry and household use by an increasingly affluent population.
