Tang's rights and wrongs
People should not expect businessmen to stand up for human rights, prominent entrepreneur David Tang Wing-cheung said yesterday.
'I would not expect a professor of music to spend his entire life protesting about abuse of human rights in Hong Kong and anywhere else. I would not expect businessmen to do so either.
'Their business is business. Their business is not human rights,' Mr Tang, the grandson of the late philanthropist Sir Shiu-kin Tang, told the foreign press at the Foreign Correspondents' Club.
There were two types of people when talking about human rights, said Mr Tang.
'One will keep silent and decide if this is still a place they want to spend the rest of their lives, another, much more courageous, will stand up and try to fight for others.
'But I do not know which type I will belong to. I think for a lot of time we act from impulse . . . but I hope I have the courage.'
