Casinos prove big drawcard

Casinos are fast becoming Canada's hottest tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors every year and earning revenue exceeding the country's film and music industries combined.

In Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Crystal Casino offers elegant gaming amid sophisticated 'continental' surroundings on the 7th floor of the Hotel Fort Garry, the city's grandest and most historic landmark.

The cities of Montreal, Hull, and Charlevoix boast Quebec's finest casinos.

The renowned Casino de Montreal is one of the city's most magnificent architectural structures, while the Casino de Charlevoix, on the picturesque banks of the St Lawrence river, is connected by underground to the historic hotel, Manoir Richelieu.

Not to be outdone by Montreal and Charlevoix is the Casino de Hull, located only minutes from Ottawa's Parliament Hill.

Ontario's Windsor Casino is, meanwhile, ranked as Canada's top tourist attraction. In 1994 alone, its first year of operation, it attracted 4.8 million visitors. It has been operating in temporary facilities but, later this year, will celebrate the opening of a US$400 million permanent complex.
