Sports fees increase by eight per cent
Entry fees for participation in Urban Council recreation and sports activities will be raised by about eight per cent from August 1, a council spokesman said.
He said the increases would range from $1 to $10.
'It is estimated that the council's overall deficit for organising these activities in 1997/98 will come to about $103.3 million,' he said.
'This means that the council will subsidise about 88 per cent of the cost for providing recreation and sports activities for urban dwellers to enjoy.' Senior citizens, children under 14, full-time students and individuals receiving disability allowances could still participate for half the normal rate, he said.
Some programmes, including activities for special groups, carnivals, and individual knock-out competitions, would be provided for free, he said.
