A Fujian man was arrested in Sichuan province after he provided three people with fake passports and US green cards in an attempt to smuggle them out of the country, Xinhua (the New China News Agency) reported yesterday.

The three were arrested as they tried to board a flight from Chengdu to Hong Kong, the report said.

Wang Lizhang, a Fujian native, agreed to provide the trio with fake passports and green cards, it was alleged. If they managed to cross the Chinese border successfully, they would each pay him US$30,000 (HK$231,900), the report said.

Wang moved to America in 1987, and after gaining residency returned to his home province early this year.
