Boulet goes back to the future in bid for Open

John Crean

HONG Kong's Dominique Boulet, back at ground zero of his professional golf career, said yesterday that if the calm conditions remain he will have to shoot back-to-back rounds in the 60s to qualify for next week's British Open at Royal Troon.

Boulet, who will tee off in the 36-hole final qualifying at Glasgow Gailes today, practised in perfect conditions without a whiff of the notorious wind that can set scores skyrocketing on the links course.

'The weather is fantastic and the course is in great nick,' said Boulet. 'If it stays like this it will take something like five under par to qualify - my game is in fair shape.' The 32-year-old, whose first tournament as a professional was over Glasgow Gailes in the qualifying tournament for the 1989 Open, is making his fifth attempt to secure a place in the world's most enduring tournament.

He is part of a 29-strong group from the Asian PGA's Omega Tour who are among 480 players chasing less than 60 places in the elite lineup.

The qualifying tournament is held over four links courses near Troon.

'It's great that so many players from the Asian PGA are trying to qualify,' said Boulet.

'The Omega Tour and sponsors Johnnie Walker are doing a lot for us - no other tour in the world would help players like this.'
