To be proficient in a language, one has to do well at least in the essential components of that language. In mastering the English language, one has to comprehend what is being said and to express clearly what one wants to communicate.


A proficiency in grammar is essential too to make both comprehension and expression possible.


A good vocabulary can enhance one's thinking and the joy of using a language. When universities are lowering the standard of English for entry they are not solving but just accommodating a deteriorating situation.


It is important to look into the test results and locate what are the weak points in students' comprehension of English language, so that the weaknesses can be remedied.
