Rewards for VTC wizards

Students challenged to put their skills and technical knowledge to the test have been awarded prizes.

The seven technical institutes of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) have presented prizes for their 1996-97 project and skills competitions and the Chen Hsong scholarship awards.

These competitions were divided into categories for mechanical engineering, and electrical and electronics. Skills competitions were open to craft students.

VTC executive director Professor Lee Ngok told the presentation ceremony: 'They call for creativity, innovation, problem-solving ability, organisation and team-work with functioning, economy and producibility of final products in mind.' First prize in the mechanical engineering category went to Morrison Hill Technical Institute for its computer-controlled air-conditioning system.

The winning project in the electrical and electronics category was a car-park smart-card system, designed and made by Sha Tin Technical Institute students.

Craft skills awards were presented for work that included electrical engineering and bench- fitting.

Thirty-five students won Chen Hsong scholarships.
