Purge on porn nets rewards

A crackdown on pornography and illegal publishing has been hailed as a success.

Xinhua (the New China News Agency) said police had closed 40 laser disc production lines, seized more than 1.86 million pornographic video discs and pirated compact discs and 12 million illegal publications since late last year.

More than 1,100 retail outlets selling the illegal material were shut and more than 1,000 publishers investigated.

Although the report said a number of 'illegal elements' and 'criminal syndicates' had been dealt with, it did not say if anyone had been charged or jailed.

Cultural Minister Liu Zhongde and Secretary-General of the Central Legal and Law Committee Shu Huaide chaired a national anti-pornography and publishing conference. They said success had been achieved in the crackdown.
