Former Law Society president and outspoken critic on political issues Christopher Chan Cheuk has been appointed a deputy judge of the District Court.

Mr Chan, a partner in the solicitors' firm Woo, Kwan, Lee and Lo, stepped down from the presidency last May. He said he wanted to devote more time to his law firm.

Mr Chan, who started his new job last Monday, will serve in the Judiciary until September 19.

The appointment of Mr Chan brings the number of deputy judges at District Court level, including family courts and Lands Tribunal, to 20.
