Fuzhou moves to block building on farmland
Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, will stop diverting land for non-agricultural purposes, particularly the real-estate sector, according to official reports.
City land administration bureau officials said the move was part of a national drive to protect arable land and check on farmland used by real estate businesses, Xinhua (the New China News Agency) reported.
Massive real estate development poses a threat to farmland in Fuzhou and throughout the mainland.
In its continuing check, Fuzhou has investigated 138 tracts of land that were left idle by real-estate developers and retrieved 33 tracts.
To cope with the situation, strict measures - including imposing fees on idle land and demolishing illegal make-shift buildings - have been introduced to protect and save farmland, the report said.
