Taxi operators want to run 'luxury' taxis which would be equipped with TVs, hi-fis and car phones - at double the current fares. The drivers, who would need at least five years' driving experience, would have to wear uniforms and white gloves, according to a proposal submitted to the Transport Advisory Committee. Five hundred taxis could be prepared for a trial.
