Apollo 13 (1995) (HBO, 4.45pm) Wonderful, gripping telling of the near disastrous mission of Apollo 13, which in 1970 nearly killed all its crew. Tom Hanks is brilliant as Jim Lovell the captain who had to get himself and his crew down safely. Will there ever be a movie version of the current Mir cock-up? It couldn't be as exciting as this.

The Joy Luck Club (1993) (HBO, 11.35pm) Amy Tan's best-seller brought to the big screen with all the nauseating sentimentality and none of the insight. At least it gave Asian-American actors like Tamlyn Tomita (right) and Ming-na Ren some work.

Angie (1994) (HBO, 7pm) Geena Davis is great as a wise-cracking Brooklyn girl who suddenly wonders what life is all about.
