The 'ship of the desert' proved a bit unpredictable when it travelled away from home to take part in Europe's first camel race in Berlin.

To the bewilderment of more than 30,000 spectators, two camels sat down on the track during the warm-up lap and it took 15 minutes to get them moving again.

Another stopped two metres from the finish and had to be prodded over the line by its jockey to win the race.

'It's a shame we can't place any bets,' said one spectator. 'The camels would be ideal for bets because you never know what they are going to do,' he said.

British woman Angie Taylor is carrying a cross the length of Britain and spreading the word that women should be more submissive.

'In Scotland, one couple who had been divorced for 23 years heard our message and decided to reunite. It has been amazing,' said the 46- year-old, who with her husband counsels drug addicts.

Mrs Taylor said: 'A woman can be a successful businesswoman, but she should not be seeking fulfilment for herself.' Japanese parents will no longer have to shout when they want their children to come home.
