Line up for measles jabs

The Department of Health Special Measles Vaccination Campaign will from next month target children aged one to 11.

A department spokesman said children aged one to five would be vaccinated at its general outpatient clinics and maternal and child health centres, between September 8 and November 15.

Appointment discs for this group are available at the clinics and health centres.

Children aged six to 11 will be vaccinated at school.

The spokesman said: 'The objective of the campaign is to prevent a predicted measles outbreak in Hong Kong.

'Although most children have already received one dose of the vaccine at around one year old, a second dose will enhance their immunity.' Measles, an acute contagious disease, can lead to chest, ear and brain infections.

The last major outbreak was in 1988, when 3,162 cases were reported.

A special measles hotline, at 2833 0111, is in operation to provide the public with information.
