Sisters from a Hong Kong branch of the society formed by Mother Teresa held a simple service yesterday.

Just under 30 people prayed and sang at the Missionaries of Charity's Home of Love, in Nam Cheong Estate, Shamshuipo.

One of the sisters said: 'We were prepared for Mother Teresa to pass away because we have known how sick she has been. We have prayed for her. I suppose, although it seemed sudden, it was God's time.' A memorial service for the nun famed for her work among the poor will be held on Friday at the Catholic Cathedral, Caine Road, Mid-Levels. The Indian community will meet this week to plan a memorial.

The first Hong Kong branch of the society opened in Mongkok in 1983. The Nam Cheong Estate centre opened in 1987.

White roses and lilies surrounded the altar inside the small chapel. Beside the bouquets lay a card bearing the message: 'Mother Teresa, your spirit and your love will be with us forever.'
