Diaoyu activists plan to set off for the disputed islands this month, possibly in the boat damaged in a collision with Japanese security vessels in May.

The protest group, Bao Diao Ho, will try to raise $600,000 during the next two weeks to rent a cargo ship for the voyage. So far it has only collected half the amount.

Group organiser Wong Wai-ming said if the money could not be raised, the group would have to borrow the Diao Yu Tai, which was damaged in May's expedition.

The boat, which is owned by another Diaoyu group, the Action Committee for Defending the Diaoyu Islands, collided with Japanese coastguard vessels trying to prevent it approaching the islands.

'We need to spend about $100,000 to repair the hull and the engine. But we are worried that the boat is too small for the expedition,' Mr Wong said.
